10 Lighthearted Films With Surprisingly Dark Endings, Explained

Some films spend most of their running time being warm, funny or romantic, then end on a death, a break-up or a loss. La La Land, Marley and Me, My Girl, Titanic and The Grand Budapest Hotel are well-known examples. Here are 10 lighthearted films whose endings are much darker than their tone suggests.

1. La La Land (2016)

Damien Chazelle’s musical follows Mia, an aspiring actor, and Sebastian, a jazz pianist, through bright song-and-dance numbers in Los Angeles. For most of the film it feels like a classic Hollywood romance.

The ending jumps five years ahead. Both have achieved their dreams, but not together. A long fantasy sequence shows the life they might have had, before they share one look and part. The film won six Academy Awards, and its ending is still debated by fans.

2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Steven Spielberg’s film is full of wonder, with glowing spaceships, playful lights and a five-note musical greeting between humans and aliens. It is often remembered as a hopeful science fiction classic.

Look closer and the story is darker. Roy Neary becomes so obsessed with his visions that his family falls apart and his wife leaves with the children. At the end he boards the alien mothership and leaves Earth, and his family, behind.

3. Chasing Amy (1997)

Kevin Smith’s film starts as a talky, comic romance between comic book artist Holden and fellow artist Alyssa, with plenty of jokes from Holden’s best friend Banky.

Holden’s jealousy about Alyssa’s past and his clumsy attempt to fix everything ends both the relationship and his friendship and working partnership with Banky. The final scene, a brief meeting at a comic convention a year later, shows how much he lost.

4. The Big Lebowski (1998)

The Coen brothers’ cult comedy about the Dude, a laid-back bowler caught up in a kidnapping mix-up, is mostly absurd and very quotable.

Near the end, the quiet bowling teammate Donny dies of a heart attack after a confrontation in a parking lot. The scene where his ashes are scattered and blow back into the Dude’s face is funny, but it is also a real loss in a film that seemed to have no stakes.

5. Marley and Me (2008)

Based on John Grogan’s memoir, this family film stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as a couple with a famously badly behaved Labrador. Most of it is light comedy about chewed furniture and failed training classes.

In the last stretch Marley grows old and becomes seriously ill, and the family has to have him put to sleep, with John beside him. The closing scenes are among the most tearful in any family film.

6. Titanic (1997)

James Cameron’s epic spends its first half on a sweeping romance between Jack and Rose, with dancing below deck and the famous scene at the bow of the ship.

Everyone knows the ship sinks, but the scale of the loss still lands hard. Jack dies of hypothermia in the freezing water while Rose survives on floating debris. The film won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

7. My Girl (1991)

This coming-of-age film follows 11-year-old Vada, played by Anna Chlumsky, and her best friend Thomas J, played by Macaulay Culkin, through a summer of bike rides and first crushes.

Thomas J goes back into the woods to find Vada’s lost mood ring and dies after being stung by bees, to which he is severely allergic. The funeral scene shocked many young viewers who expected a gentle family film.

8. True Grit (2010)

The Coen brothers’ Western, based on Charles Portis’s novel, has a lot of dry humour. Young Mattie Ross hires the gruff US Marshal Rooster Cogburn, played by Jeff Bridges, to track down her father’s killer.

After a hard journey, the epilogue jumps 25 years. An adult Mattie, who lost an arm to a snakebite, finally writes to Rooster, only to learn he died three days before she arrived. The film ends with her alone at his grave.

9. One Day (2011)

Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of David Nicholls’s novel, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, checks in on Emma and Dexter on the same date every year for two decades. It plays like a slow-burning romantic comedy.

Soon after they finally marry, Emma is hit by a lorry while cycling and dies. The rest of the film follows Dexter’s grief. The story was adapted again as a Netflix series in 2024, which kept the same ending.

10. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Wes Anderson’s comedy is all pastel colours, neat symmetrical frames and quick slapstick, centred on the concierge M. Gustave and his loyal lobby boy Zero.

The narration reveals the sad truth at the end. Gustave was later shot by soldiers while defending Zero, and Agatha, Zero’s wife, died young of illness along with their son. Zero keeps the hotel to hold on to their memory.

Why these endings work

Each of these films earns its ending by making viewers care first. The jokes and colour build attachment, so the loss feels personal.
