Governor of Madhya Pradesh Lalji Tandon passed away in the early hours of Tuesday. He was 85. His demise was announced by his son, Ashutosh Tandon, on Twitter with the message “babuji Nahi rahe (my father has passed away)”.

Ashutosh also said the body would be taken to Gulala Ghat Chowkfor the last rites and also requested the public to pay their respects from home due to the ongoing pandemic. “Keeping in mind the coronavirus pandemic, I request you to follow rules and regulations announced by the administration and pay your tributes to my father from your own houses. This will help in maintaining the social distancing as well,” Ashutosh tweeted.
Tandon had been admitted in Lucknow and was on put on ventilator support for breathing problems, difficulty in urination, and fever. In a medical bulletin, the Medanta Hospital this morning said: “Shri Lal Ji Tandon was admitted at Medanta on June 11. During investigations, he was diagnosed with chronic liver disease, because of his multiple ailments, he was put on the life support system. Team of medical experts made all efforts for his survival, despite all efforts he took his last breath today at 5:35 AM.”
After Lal Ji Tandon was hospitalized the last month, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel took additional charge of Madhya Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a picture of them and remembered Tandon for his “untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance to public welfare,” adding, “Shri Lalji Tandon was well-versed with constitutional matters. He enjoyed a long and close association with beloved Atal Ji.”
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in a series of tweets, wrote: “I pray to God that his soul rests in peace and the family finds the courage at this difficult time.”
“While he was the governor, Tandon Ji always guided us to take the right path. His love for the country and his contribution towards the development will be remembered for a long time. He will remain alive in our memories,” Mr. Chouhan said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also condoled Lal Ji Tandon’s death on Twitter. “Saddened to hear about the death of Madhya Pradesh Governor. In his death, the nation has lost an able administrator, popular leader, and a social worker, He was the soul of Lucknow. May his soul rest in peace,” he wrote in Hindi.
With a political career of over five decades, Tandon served in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for two terms from 1978 to 1984, and 1990-1996; as an MLA in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly for three terms between 1996 to 2009; as MP in the 15th Lok Sabha; he was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Lucknow by a margin over 40,000 votes over Rita Bahuguna Joshi of Indian National Congress. A seat on which he succeeded former BJP President Atal Bihari Vajpayee since 1991 for four consecutive terms. Despite enormous electoral spending, Akhilesh Das of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) polled third, trailing by 70 thousand votes. As the Governor of Bihar, Tandon was praised for streamlining the academic activities of the state universities.
