The wait is finally over, Sony has finally unveiled the prices of PlayStation 5 for India. The PS5 will be available in two variants: Digital Edition and Disc Edition. As the name suggests the PS5 Digital Edition will not have a disc drive (4K UHD Blu-Ray Drive), meaning you can only download and purchase PS5 games from the PlayStation Store. Of course, with the omission of Disc Drive, the Digital Edition sees a nice price cut.
The PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition costs ₹49,990 and ₹39,990 respectively. The Digital Edition will not feature the Disc Drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has the same hardware, meaning it will perform the same as PS5, just the Disc is omitted and nothing else. The Digital Edition might look tempting, however, in the long run, the PS5 (with Disc Drive) will save you money, with the used games and sales from third-party retailers. The backward compatibility will work like this:
- PS5: PS4 Disc + Digital (You will be able to play PS4 disc and digital games)
- PS5 Digital Edition: PS4 Digital only (You will only be able to play PS4 games that were purchased digitally)
The Console will feature a host of accessories and games at launch. The PS5 games are priced extremely poorly by Sony India and costs ₹4,999. Of course, this price increase isn’t just for India, the PS5 games cost $70(₹5,100) in the USA. While these prices may seem fair, we are infuriated by the price of Marvel Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
These prices for the games may work in the USA, a developed country. However, gaming is a luxury and these prices don’t match the prices of PC games offered by Steam which cost in the ₹1000-₹2000 range. However, for PlayStation gamers on a budget, We would like to suggest you to wait for sales, buy second-hand, and better yet still play PS4 games. PS4 games still have great graphics and gameplay and you won’t be missing out on anything if you don’t buy the latest PS5 games. Another added bonus is that with PS5 backward compatibility, you will see increased frame-rates and graphics across major PS4 games.
With everything in place, it puts every gaming system in perspective. The Xbox Series costs ₹34,990, ₹5,000 less than the PS5 Digital Edition. The PS5 Digital Edition may look better than Xbox Series S, as for ₹5,000 you are getting significantly better hardware, Xbox Series S will run games at 1080p-1440p whereas the PS5 Digital Edition will run games at 4K. However, the value proposition of the Xbox Series S + Game Pass is amazing. For PC gamers, you may want to wait for AMD’s RDNA2 GPU launch on 28th October these are the same GPU that will be powering the next-gen consoles.
