Meet Meena Bindra, she is a designer turned entrepreneur who turned her passion to a 600 Cr business by launching its designer clothes venture, Biba Apparels private limited. Meena was 39 when she decided to turn her passion and hobby into an enterprise. In 1983, Meena started the designing of clothes from her house in Mumbai and shape its venture as a Biba enterprise. In 2015, she received the APEX lifetime achievement Award, the premium award of the Indian apparel industry is given by the clothing manufacturers’ Association of India annually. Meena Bindra said in an interview “I want BIBA to be a global brand” as she wanted to launch her stores in Dubai and London. She also said “When I started designing clothes as a hobby to earn some pocket money, I never dreamt of becoming a businesswoman,” and then she said, “if you have a passion for doing something just do it,”.

As a 39-year-old housewife and mother of two, she turned her free time into creative business with an initial investment of 8000 taken from bank as a loan, 33 years back. The ‘Punjabi suit’ as it used to be called, became an important part of every woman’s wardrobe. The kurta with pockets become more convenient to the people and according to BIBA started pumping up which become an estimated turn over 600 Cr currently.BIBA started presenting her designs in Bollywood with Na Tum Jano Na Hum in 2004 and also provided costumes for blockbusters including Devdas, Hulchal, Baghban. BIBA outfits were also seen in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The company has also tied up with famous designers like Rohit Bal and Anju Modi.

 

At 70-plus, she wears her brand with pride and still explores the way of creation every day and that should be the spirit of all, especially the youngster those who quit with they try and quit to work hard. Inspiration like she should be on every struggling person’s mind because hard work never disappoints.
