U.S. President on Wednesday said that his government is trying to determine whether the coronavirus originated from a lab in Wuhan, China.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Beijing "needs to come clean" on what they know.
On Tuesday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley said that according to US intelligence's indication coronavirus likely occurred naturally, as opposed to being created in a Chinese laboratory, but still, there is nothing certain.
Fox News reported on Wednesday that the virus emanated in a Wuhan laboratory not as a bioweapon, but as part of China's effort to illustrate that its efforts to identify and fight viruses are greater or at least equal to the capabilities of the United States.
On being asked at a news conference at White House, Trump said he was aware of the reports of the virus escaping from Wuhan Laboratory.
He also said, "We are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation that happened."
Fox News reports and many others reports have suggested the lax safety standards in the Wuhan lab where all virology experiments take place led to someone getting infected and appearing at a nearby "wet" market, where the virus began to spread.
Pompeo, in a Fox News Channel interview after Trump's news conference, said: "We know this virus originated in Wuhan, China."
He further added that they need the Chinese government to open up and explain how the virus spread.
Trump and other officials have expressed deep scepticism about China's Official death toll from the virus, which is around 3000, dramatically lesser than that of the U.S. which is 20,000 and constantly rising.
