1. Sound of Metal
Riz Ahmed plays Ruben, a heavy metal drummer who starts losing his hearing almost overnight. Former addict Ruben has to choose between chasing an expensive surgery and learning to live in a community of deaf people who see deafness as a way of life, not a problem to fix.

The film’s sound design puts you inside Ruben’s head, switching between muffled noise and silence. It won two Academy Awards, for Best Sound and Best Film Editing, from six nominations. Riz Ahmed’s performance earned a Best Actor nomination.
2. One Night in Miami
Regina King’s first feature as director imagines a real night in February 1964, when Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali), Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown met in a Miami motel room. The conversation is fictional, based on Kemp Powers’s stage play, but the meeting did happen.
The four men argue about fame, faith, money and their duty to the civil rights movement. It works like a stage play with great acting, and earned three Oscar nominations.
3. Uncle Frank
Set in 1973, this Amazon original stars Paul Bettany as Frank, a New York literature professor, and Sophia Lillis as his niece Beth. When Frank’s father dies, the two drive to the family home in South Carolina, joined unexpectedly by Frank’s partner Wally.
Written and directed by Alan Ball, the film is about a gay man facing a family that never accepted him. It is funny and sad in equal measure, and Bettany’s performance is one of his best.
4. Beautiful Boy
Based on two memoirs, one by journalist David Sheff and one by his son Nic, the film follows a father trying to help his son through methamphetamine addiction. Steve Carell plays David and Timothee Chalamet plays Nic.
The film avoids easy answers. Relapse, hope and exhaustion repeat in a cycle, which is what makes it feel real. Chalamet received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for the role.
5. The Florida Project
Sean Baker’s film follows six-year-old Moonee and her young single mother Halley, who live in a cheap motel close to Walt Disney World in Florida. Through Moonee’s eyes, the summer is full of games and adventures, while the adults around her struggle to pay rent.
Willem Dafoe plays the patient motel manager and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Baker later won Best Director and Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars for Anora, so this is a good place to see his earlier work.
6. Thirteen Lives
Ron Howard’s film recreates the 2018 rescue of a boys’ football team and their coach from the flooded Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand. Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell play British cave divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, who led much of the underwater work.
The film skips Hollywood heroics and focuses on planning, risk and the long dives in near-zero visibility. It released as a Prime Video original in 2022 and did not get a wide cinema run, which is why many people missed it.
7. The Big Sick
Comedian Kumail Nanjiani co-wrote this film with his wife Emily V. Gordon, based on how they met. Kumail, a Pakistani-American stand-up comic, falls for Emily, played by Zoe Kazan, while his parents keep setting him up with Pakistani women. Then Emily falls seriously ill.
