Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, and the main puja is done that evening, after sunset. In New Delhi the Dhanteras puja muhurat is 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM, while Mumbai gets a later window of 6:35 PM to 8:35 PM. Below are the timings for 12 cities, the gold buying window and a short list of what to buy at different budgets.

All puja timings here come from Drik Panchang. We cross-checked them with the city table published by Astropatri, and the tithi timings with Shubh Panchang. They match.

Dhanteras 2026 date and tithi

Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodashi, the 13th day of the waning moon in Kartik (Ashwin in the amanta calendar). In 2026 the tithi begins on Friday morning and runs into Saturday morning, so the evening puja falls on Friday.

Detail Timing (IST)
Dhanteras date Friday, 6 November 2026
Trayodashi tithi begins 10:30 AM, 6 November
Trayodashi tithi ends 10:47 AM, 7 November
Pradosh Kaal (New Delhi) 5:33 PM – 8:09 PM
Puja muhurat / Vrishabha Kaal (New Delhi) 6:02 PM – 7:57 PM (1 hour 55 minutes)

The muhurat is the part of Pradosh Kaal (the time just after sunset) when Vrishabha lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed sign, and the belief is that a puja done in a fixed lagna keeps Lakshmi in the house. That is why the muhurat starts about half an hour after sunset and not at sunset itself.

Dhanteras puja muhurat 2026: city-wise timings

Sunset and lagna times shift with longitude, so a city in the west like Mumbai gets its window more than an hour after Kolkata. Use the time for your own city.

City Dhanteras puja muhurat, 6 Nov 2026
New Delhi 6:02 PM – 7:57 PM
Noida 6:01 PM – 7:57 PM
Gurugram 6:03 PM – 7:59 PM
Chandigarh 6:00 PM – 7:54 PM*
Jaipur 6:11 PM – 8:07 PM
Ahmedabad 6:30 PM – 8:28 PM
Mumbai 6:35 PM – 8:35 PM
Pune 6:32 PM – 8:31 PM
Bengaluru 6:25 PM – 8:20 PM
Chennai 6:14 PM – 8:10 PM
Hyderabad 6:15 PM – 8:13 PM*
Kolkata 5:28 PM – 7:26 PM

*Chandigarh and Hyderabad are from Drik Panchang only. All other cities match in both Drik Panchang and Astropatri.

If your town is not listed, take the time of the nearest big city. Places within 100-150 km usually differ by only a few minutes. Surat, for example, gets 6:37 PM to 8:37 PM as per Shubh Panchang, close to Mumbai.

Why some websites show different times

You may see other windows online, such as 5:49 PM to 7:15 PM or 5:42 PM to 7:38 PM for Delhi. Some sites work out the muhurat from Pradosh Kaal alone and ignore Vrishabha lagna. One also gives a different tithi start time that does not match the two panchangs above. We have gone with Drik Panchang because its tithi times agree with Shubh Panchang and its city times agree with Astropatri. Your family pandit’s panchang is still the final word if your tradition follows a different method.

Best time to buy gold and silver on Dhanteras 2026

Gold, silver and utensils are traditionally bought while Trayodashi is running. In 2026 that window is from 10:30 AM on Friday, 6 November, to 10:47 AM on Saturday, 7 November. You can shop at any time in this period.

Families who also follow the choghadiya can use these slots for New Delhi, as listed by Astropatri:

  • Shubh: 12:05 PM – 1:27 PM, 6 November
  • Char: 4:11 PM – 5:33 PM, 6 November
  • Labh: 8:49 PM – 10:27 PM, 6 November
  • Shubh: 7:59 AM – 9:21 AM, 7 November

Choghadiya slots move with sunrise, so in Mumbai or Bengaluru they shift by about half an hour. Before you pay for any gold jewellery, check the 6-digit hallmark code. Our guide on how to check gold purity with HUID on the BIS CARE app takes under a minute.

How to do Dhanteras puja at home

Dhanteras puja is shorter than the Diwali puja. Most homes keep it simple:

  1. Clean the house and the entrance during the day, and make a small rangoli at the door.
  2. In the muhurat, place idols or pictures of Lakshmi, Ganesh and Kuber on a clean chowki. Many families also worship Lord Dhanvantari, as Dhanteras is observed as Dhanvantari Jayanti.
  3. Offer roli, akshat, flowers, a diya and sweets. Place the new metal item or coin you bought before the deities.
  4. After the puja, light the Yam Deepam: a four-wick diya kept outside the main door, facing south. It is left burning through the night.

Most of the items overlap with what you will need two days later on Diwali. Our Lakshmi Puja samagri list covers all of them in one place.

What to buy on Dhanteras by budget

Buying something new on Dhanteras is seen as a good sign for the year ahead. It does not have to be gold. Here are common picks by budget. The links open Amazon search results, so you can compare sellers and prices yourself.

Under Rs 500

  • A new broom (jhadu broom), bought in many homes to sweep away poverty
  • brass diya or a set of clay diyas for the Yam Deepam and Diwali
  • Whole coriander seeds (whole dhaniya seeds), offered in the puja and later sown in pots
  • A small Kuber yantra for the puja chowki

Rs 500 – Rs 3,000

  • steel utensils set, the most common Dhanteras buy in north Indian homes
  • brass puja thali set that you can use for the Diwali puja as well
  • copper water bottle or a copper jug

Rs 3,000 and above

  • silver coin 10 gram with Lakshmi-Ganesh engraving; the price follows the day’s silver rate
  • gold coin 24k hallmarked from a known brand, with the HUID on the pack
  • silver puja items such as a small silver diya or bowl

If you already have old silver at home, polishing it before the puja works just as well. Here is how to clean silver at home with foil and baking soda.

Diwali 2026 dates after Dhanteras

Festival Date
Dhanteras Friday, 6 November
Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi) Saturday, 7 November
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) Sunday, 8 November
Bhai Dooj Wednesday, 11 November

Plan your shopping for Friday afternoon if you can. Markets get crowded after 5 PM, and the puja window in most cities opens around 6 PM.
