The government officials in numerous parts of the country are doing their best to embellish their surroundings. This has particularly been the case with dumping lands, many of which have been transformed into forests and children’s parks.

A massive garbage dumping land at Malad (West) has been restored into a garden by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In accumulation to the disposal of garbage, this land was also loaded with unjust encroachments.

BMC officials told that even though the plot was taken over by civic body way back in 2002, it had been lying untouched since then, concluding in the region swivelling into a garbage dumping area. Nevertheless, civic officials took the endeavour to rework this area in 2007.

“This garden is now very popular among residents of Malad West area. Apart from trees, we have created pathways for walkers, installed a gazebo and even constructed a toilet for visitors”, said a senior civic official.

“There were around 550 hutments which were removed in 2014. Now, there is a 2km long mud pathway. Because of the different varieties of trees, many of which are medicinal, many botany students also visit the garden. It is very popular among butterfly watchers and bird watchers too,” the official told.

And added, it’s worth specifying that the garden was formally opened in 2017 and has now become fully active as most of the saplings have grown to their capability.
