Following the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Aligarh Muslim University has made the arrangements of sending the stranded students back home. They started the operation from yesterday i.e. 1st May 2020. AMU students who are stuck in the hostels due to the lockdown are being sent home through roadways. The buses are available from Proctor’s Office of the university.

A notice was issued by AMU in which Registrar Abdul Hamid said: “The process of transportation of students will start from Friday and buses will be available at the Proctor’s office.” The notice further said: “Students are advised to avail of this facility as no class, examination and entrance test are scheduled for May and June and it is important to get all the students safely to their hometowns given the rising cases of COVID-19 in Aligarh district and the consequent potential risk of COVID-19 infection in hostels.”

All the buses are first sanitized and students are gone through check-up before travelling home. It is a very much required safety measure. “Thirty-nine buses carrying 30-35 students each left the campus on Friday.” said Syed Ali Nawaz Zaidi, Deputy Proctor of AMU “Initially, travel arrangements by buses for students residing in Uttar Pradesh are being made by the district administration and it will be followed for other States, including Bihar, Jammu, and Kashmir and Jharkhand, etc,” he added.

AMU’s Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tariq Mansoor said: “The process of sending students is a continuous one… students are advised to be patient and not to panic unnecessarily.”

“There is no compulsion on students to leave the campus but the university may not be able to provide transport if they decide to leave the campus at a later date,” stated Mohd Wasim Ali, Proctor of AMU. The arrangement aims to send the students home safely to spend Ramadan with their families “Only foreign students would stay back” said University spokesperson Shafey Kidwai.
