1. Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018)
Recorded at the Sydney Opera House, Nanette begins as a normal set and then turns into a sharp look at how comedy works and what it leaves out. The Australian comedian talks about identity, trauma and why she wanted to stop making self-deprecating jokes.

The special won a Peabody Award and an Emmy for writing. It is not a light watch, but it is one of the most discussed stand-up specials ever released.
2. Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
Burnham wrote, shot, edited and performed Inside alone in one room during the pandemic. It is closer to a musical diary than a regular stand-up set, with songs about the internet, loneliness and turning 30.
It won several Emmys, including for directing and writing, and many of its songs went viral. If you only watch one special from this list, this is a strong choice.
3. Bo Burnham: what. (2013)
Burnham’s earlier special mixes piano songs, poetry and fast jokes with precise lighting and sound cues. It shows the style he later developed further in Inside, and is lighter and sillier in tone.
4. John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018)
Mulaney is known for long, carefully built stories, and this set at New York’s Radio City Music Hall is one of his best. Stories about his Catholic school days and a strange school assembly speaker are fan favourites.
The special won an Emmy for writing. It uses little profanity, so it is one of the easier choices for watching with older teenagers.

5. Ali Wong: Baby Cobra (2016)
Wong performed this special while seven months pregnant, and her jokes about pregnancy, marriage and work are frank and very adult. It made her one of the biggest names in American stand-up.
She followed it with more Netflix specials, including Hard Knock Wife, and later won acclaim as an actor in the series Beef.
6. Trevor Noah: Afraid of the Dark (2017)
The South African comedian, who hosted The Daily Show from 2015 to 2022, built this set around accents, travel, race and American politics. His impressions of people from different countries are the highlight.
It is a good starting point for viewers who prefer observational comedy with a global view.
7. Dave Chappelle: The Age of Spin (2017)
This was part of Chappelle’s comeback deal with Netflix after more than a decade away from major specials. He mixes stories about meeting O. J. Simpson and other celebrities with commentary on race and fame.
Chappelle’s material is deliberately provocative, and some of his later Netflix specials drew strong criticism for jokes about transgender people. Check the maturity rating before watching.
8. Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (2013)
Birbiglia tells one long story about love, commitment and his own doubts about marriage. It plays more like a one-man play than a string of jokes, and the payoff at the end is warm.
9. Vir Das: Landing (2022)
Indian comedian Vir Das recorded Landing in the United States. It touches on identity, being an Indian abroad and the reaction to his viral monologue about “two Indias”.
The special won the International Emmy Award for comedy in 2023, which made Das the first Indian stand-up comedian to receive that honour. Our people section has more on Indian entertainers.
