Quick answer

Gross is the total ticket sales including GST. Net is gross minus GST, and is the figure most Indian trade reports quote for domestic collections. Share (or distributor share) is the part of net that goes to the distributor and producer after the theatre keeps its cut. Worldwide figures are usually quoted as gross.

When a film “crosses ₹100 crore”, the headline rarely says which number it means. Producers, trade analysts and media often quote different figures, which is why the same film can seem to have earned different amounts.

1. Gross collection

Gross is the full amount paid by audiences at the ticket counter or online, including Goods and Services Tax (GST). The GST rate on cinema tickets depends on the ticket price. Gross is the most common way to report overseas and worldwide totals.

2. Net collection

Net collection is gross minus GST. In India, trade analysts typically quote domestic box office in net terms, especially for Hindi films. So “₹50 crore net” and “₹59 crore gross” can describe the same weekend.

3. Distributor share

The theatre, whether a multiplex or a single screen, keeps a portion of the net. What remains goes to the distributor, who then pays the producer based on their deal. The theatre’s percentage is usually lower in the first week and rises in later weeks, and it varies by agreement. Share is the figure that decides whether a film is a financial success.

4. Worldwide gross

Worldwide gross adds the Indian gross and overseas gross. It is the number often used in posters and press releases, because it is the largest.

Other terms you will see in box office reports

  • Footfalls: the number of tickets sold, which lets you compare films across years regardless of ticket prices.
  • Occupancy: the percentage of seats filled across shows, often reported for morning or evening shows.
  • Opening day and opening weekend: collections on the first day and first three days, key signals of audience interest.
  • Language-wise net: for films released in several languages, reports may split collections by the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and other versions.
  • Hit, flop and blockbuster: trade verdicts that compare earnings, usually share, with the film’s cost.

Why box office numbers differ between sources

  • One report uses gross and another uses net.
  • Some figures are estimates from trade trackers, while others are official figures from producers.
  • Producer figures sometimes include advance screenings or paid previews that trackers exclude.
  • Reports update at different times, so early estimates change.

How to read a box office headline

Check whether the number is gross or net, domestic or worldwide, and who is reporting it. For comparing two films, net domestic figures from the same trade source are the fairest comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net box office in India?

Gross includes GST on tickets. Net is gross minus GST and is the figure most Indian trade reports use for domestic collections.

What is distributor share?

Distributor share is the portion of net collections that goes to the distributor and producer after the theatre keeps its percentage.

Why do producers and trade analysts report different numbers?

They may use different measures, such as gross versus net, include or exclude paid previews, or report at different times.
