“Yaad Aa Raha Hai”: Disco king Bappi Lahiri

Bappi Lahiri, known for popularizing Disco in Bollywood passed away at the age of 69 at a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022. His final rights were performed in the presence of his family and friends.

No sooner had the country recovered from the loss of Lata Mangeshkar, another legendary singer left us for his heavenly abode. Bappi Lahiri, the legendary musician and singer died on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022 after succumbing to ‘Obstructive Sleep Apnea.’

Bappi Lahiri was admitted to Juhu’s Criticare Hospital on Tuesday after complaining of chest pain and obstructive sleep apnea. He was admitted a month before but was discharged on Monday. The family called up the doctor after his condition deteriorated following which he was readmitted to the hospital, but he succumbed to the disease.

The composer-singer is survived by his wife, son Bappa and daughter Rema. 

His fans and colleagues from the industry have been mourning his loss on social media. Celebrities like Alka Yagnik, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Vindu Dara Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, and many more are devastated by his death and have paid their tributes.  He was cremated at Pawan Hans Crematorium in the presence of his relatives. His son, Bappa Lahiri reached Mumbai today from Los Angeles. Bappa Lahiri, Rema, and their mother were all teary-eyed at the funeral of the musician.

Disco king Bappi Lahiri

The Hindi film music industry witnessed a unique phase in the 1980s. The era that is now remembered for its ‘disco songs’. Bappi Lahiri gave Bollywood one of its first and biggest disco hits with the 1982 film Disco Dancer. Bappi Da, as he was fondly known, had been active in the Hindi and Bengali film music industry for a while but the success of Disco Dancer made him a popular name.

Not just the disco songs, Bappi Lahiri composed some of the unique and most memorable Bollywood numbers too. Here are some of his famous songs:

Pag Ghungroo Band

This hit track from Namak Halaal’s movie was picturized on Amitabh Bachchan. Every track from this album – ‘Thodi Si Jo Pee Li Hai’, ‘Aaj Rapat Jaaye’, ‘Raat Baaki Baat Baaki’ and ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ gained immense popularity during those days.

Nainon Mein Sapna, Sapnon Mein Sajna

This iconic song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar was also remembered for Bappi Lahiri’s music and Sri Devi and Jitendra’s dance moves. 

Some other hit songs are  Chirodini Tumi Je Aamar,  Inteha Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki,  Chalte-Chalte, etc. 

Bappi Lahiri’s music genre was different from all the other musicians of the industry and that’s why he ruled Bollywood for two decades. His music was also liked by many Hollywood singers like Michael Jackson. Bappi Lahiri in an interview revealed that Jackson applauded him for his song ‘Jimmy Jimmy. ‘ 

The country shall never be able to witness such songs ahead but his memories and music shall forever remain etched in the hearts of the people especially of the 90s era.
