1. Kapurush (1965)
Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film is based on Premendra Mitra’s story Janaiko Kapuruser Kahini. A Calcutta scriptwriter, played by Soumitra Chatterjee, is stranded in a small town and accepts a night’s stay with a tea planter. He finds that the planter’s wife, Karuna (Madhabi Mukherjee), is the woman he loved and let down as a student.
Ray wrote the screenplay and composed the music. The film is a quiet study of regret and the cost of not acting when it matters.
2. Ek Doctor Ki Maut (1990)
Tapan Sinha adapted Ramapada Chowdhury’s 1982 story Abhimanyu into this Hindi drama. Pankaj Kapur plays Dr. Dipankar Roy, who develops a leprosy vaccine but faces jealousy, red tape and a transfer to a remote village, while foreign doctors get credit for the same work. Shabana Azmi and Irrfan Khan also star.
The film is loosely based on the life of Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay, an Indian IVF pioneer. It won National Awards for Second Best Feature Film and Best Direction, and a Special Jury Award for Kapur.
3. Kaliyattam (1997)
Jayaraj’s Malayalam film moves Shakespeare’s Othello to the world of Kerala’s Theyyam ritual performance. Suresh Gopi plays the Othello figure, Manju Warrier plays Thamara (Desdemona), and Lal made his acting debut as the Iago figure, Paniyan.
Suresh Gopi won the National Award for Best Actor, and Jayaraj won the National Award for Best Director. It is one of Indian cinema’s most admired Shakespeare adaptations.
4. Pinjar (2003)
Based on Amrita Pritam’s Punjabi novel, Pinjar is set during the 1947 Partition. Urmila Matondkar plays Puro, also called Hamida, with Manoj Bajpayee as Rashid and Sanjay Suri as Ramchand. The story follows ordinary lives caught up in the upheaval of the time.
Chandraprakash Dwivedi directed and wrote the screenplay. The film won the National Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, and Bajpayee received a Special Jury Award.
5. Kalyug (1981)
Shyam Benegal’s film is a modern retelling of the Mahabharata, set among two rival business families whose feud destroys both. Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Raj Babbar and Anant Nag lead the cast.
It won the Filmfare Award for Best Film, along with Best Supporting Actress for Supriya Pathak.
6. Shubho Mahurat (2003)
Rituparno Ghosh turned Agatha Christie’s 1962 Miss Marple novel The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side into a Bengali murder mystery. Sharmila Tagore, Raakhee and Nandita Das star, with Raakhee playing Ranga Pishima.
