Childhood plays an important role in the inclusive development of an individual. The characteristics one possesses, the way one reacts in their personal and social sphere, the way they deal with their issues, and their zeal and vision towards life all of these depend on the juvenile period one had.
Home and family make the first learning space for every child. Family plays a crucial role in molding the character of an individual and its essence is reflected in their life as an adult. They subconsciously absorb and grasp the behavior and characteristics they see happening around them. Kids try to analyze and copy the behavior of what is presented before them.
In this article, we will learn about the association between the effects of family structure concerning the behavior and mental health of children. As learning starts at home and an appropriate environment at home leads to the dynamic physical, mental, and emotional well-being of humans.
Family is the first social circle a child faces. It should be the responsibility of the family to provide social, emotional, and developmental skills in their children apart from providing food and shelter. The child learns about some of the crucial aspects which are necessary for their smooth survival in their surroundings such as compassion, empathy, respect, feelings, and many more from the interactions they experience in their ambiances. These qualities help in personal and social development and help in the smooth running of their personal and social life as full-grown people.
The mentality of children and its association with the kind of environment a child has at home goes parallel to each other. Studies have shown that family relationships can have short-term and even long-term effects on one’s mental health. Children with more privileges and a positive family atmosphere are more likely to be confident, aware, and responsive than the ones that have grown in distress. Negative family structure and environment can lead to loneliness, chronic stress, and depression in some cases. Most of these aspects are also dependent on the financial background of the parents. The emotional unavailability of parents leads to serious concerns in children which can be reflected in adult life if not taken care of accurately.
Parents should be conscious and responsible enough for their behavior in front of their kids. Any parent should not inflict their ideologies and opinion on their offspring. This creates lots of unsaid pressure on the children and is impartial towards them. Parents should be rational enough to give space to the kid so that they can develop their ideologies and thought processes. A lot of mental health concerns that are studied in children are because of the parental expectations and pressure they go through.
Schools and educators should work on developing a curriculum that helps in the holistic development of students of any age group. Schooling is the foundation of how and what kind of person and career they want to opt for. Educators/mentors should be empathetic enough not only to work on the physical growth but help the children in developing healthy habits. Educators should give the students the space to have opinions and develop the habit of questioning what they feel is inappropriate. Government should work on policies that help the underprivileged children with the resources they deserve and will help in the all-around progress. These are long-term efforts but the results are not only beneficial for the child but the society and nation collectively.
