Amidst the call for going ‘vocal for local’ in the country after PM Modi’s request, netizens recently stumbled across the homegrown alternative to popular American microblogging platform, Twitter. With a similar interface as that of American site, Twitter and a white-and-blue colour scheme, the Swadeshi social media platform Tooter’s logo is not a bird but a conch shell and instead of tweets, users share Toots over it.
Launched by a Telangana-based software development firm back in August, the Indian version of Twitter found it’s way to netizens only recently and has been creating a lot of buzz on every social media site since then. Identifying itself as a Swadeshi social media platform purely ‘Made in India’. The platform having a current userbase of over 10,000, claims to have launched a “Swadeshi Andolan 2.0.” and urges users to join them in this movement on its ‘About’ section.
While the app itself has made people eager, others are really intrigued by the website’s claim that it’s been created to support ‘free speech’. Tooter also says that each one effort is going to be made to make sure that the platform “does not punish users for exercising their god-given right to talk and express their thoughts freely.”
With the ever-growing ban on products especially those from China, homegrown app developers have been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make social media platforms and apps that are clocking bazillions of downloads within the country.
Will Tooter replace Twitter? Only time will tell. But if there’s one thing that folks have found intriguing is the fact that several India’s biggest celebs and public figures already seem to join Tooter and here are those you could follow real quick:-
- Narendra Modi
- Deepika Padukone
- Virat Kohli
- Akshay Kumar
- Amit Shah
- Amitabh Bachchan
- Rahul Gandhi
- Shahrukh Kh
- Salman Khan
- Anupam Kher
