General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sitaram Yechury on Friday claimed that Central government delayed the announcement of lockdown so that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh could be sworn in.

"Knowing full well that the pandemic is galloping, Modi delayed the lockdown for swearing-in its govt in MP (Madhya Pradesh). BJP's lust for power has exposed millions to become victims. Its insatiable, unprincipled greed is directly responsible for this worsening public health emergency," he tweeted.

Just 15 months after Shivraj Chouhan lost power in MP, he again was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on 23rd March, after the Congress government collapsed in MP last month.

Madhya Pradesh is one of the most affected states by Covid-19. It has a high coronavirus mortality rate.

Yechury also asked the government to test more and more for COVID-19. In another tweet, he said,"Eighty-nine days after the first case was detected in India, we are still not testing enough. Govt must stop making excuses, for it is clear that a lockdown will only work with much higher and aggressive testing, especially in some of our most populous states."

At the same time, he also criticized the Mamta Banerjee government in West Bengal, by saying "A public health emergency needs transparency and honest communication." He further added that the TMC government in Bengal has put a million lives at risk.

Another CPI(M) leader, Fuad Hakim has approached the court, seeking data for the number of deaths and patients of COVID-19.
