Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to launch Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan website today. According to reports by the civic body officials, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray will conduct the launch.

The Indian Express reported that the website would be an information forum containing details of climate change, action plans of other cities, and the steps to take to fight the change.

It would be at the disposal of the citizens to give their feedback and suggestions as the first action plan is under construction currently and still contains the scope of improvement.

Moreover, the website would also provide information regarding the local weather change of the city.

Officials from BMC is speculating that the first climate action plan would be ready by October. The plan is made in alliance with the World Resources Institute (WRI) India.

A senior official from BMC said, “The website will provide Mumbaikars with the opportunity to give suggestions on the city’s first climate action plan. Some of the ideas will be included in the plan.”

Mumbai has given its complete dedication and support to the C40 Cities local weather management group. These groups of cities are set to develop local weather motion plans to handle local weather change, writes The Greater India. This plan has come as after Mumbai’s inclusion in the list of C40 cities in December 2020.

The “C40” connects a group of 97 cities taking solid steps for climate action. Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata are already part of this group. Bengaluru and Jaipur are categorized as “temporarily inactive” as per the C40 website.

Aditya Thackeray expressed his pleasure after the announcement. He said, “Happy to inform all the climate change action believers that I have received a confirmation mail on a unanimous vote to accept Mumbai as a @c40cities member city…We had applied to be a part of this group as we believe that our cities can lead the climate change initiative.

We thank @MayorOfLA for chairing the steering committee and all the member cities for accepting this application.

We are committed to being a leader in climate change mitigation and adaptation action and will initiate the process for other cities in Maharashtra as well,” reported The Dialogue.

The HT Times reported on June 25 about the execution of the action plan and its seven broad steps. The first two steps have already been completed.

The first step involved the “context setting,” meaning acknowledging the need for such an action plan.

The second step involved collecting the demographic data and defining the city’s socio-economic and ecological features based on existing literature and land-use studies.

Lubaina Rangwala, associate director at WRI India’s Sustainable Cities Centre, said that the final plan will be featured on the C40 cities’ website and the other cities.

“It is an external facing document, and should be easily read by other governments, private companies, people within the innovation and research space, and so on, who may not be familiar with the city,” he added.

Mumbai’s climate action plan would strategically depend on two factors, “mitigation and adaptation”. “Under the mitigation head, we will be making a greenhouse gas inventory for the city using the CIRIS tool, and further conduct a ‘scenario analysis in which we will identify potential opportunities for emissions reduction,” Rangwala further said.
