To remove the crown icon on Discord, you need to own the server and give a role with the Administrator permission the setting “Display role members separately from online members”. Once a hoisted admin role is visible in the member list, Discord hides the owner crown. There is no single toggle that switches the crown off.

What the crown icon on Discord means
The small crown next to a name in the member list marks the server owner. Discord says the icon exists so members can quickly see who to contact when they need help with a server.
Only one person can own a server at a time, so only one crown appears. Moderators and admins do not get a crown, even if they have full permissions.

How to remove the crown icon on Discord: step by step
These steps follow Discord’s own help centre guidance. Menu names can move slightly between app updates, but the settings are the same on desktop and in the browser.
- Open Server Settings. Click the server name at the top left and choose Server Settings.
- Go to Roles. Select Roles and click the plus button or Create Role.
- Name the role. Call it something simple such as “Admin” or “Owner Team”.
- Turn on the separate display option. In the role settings, switch on “Display role members separately from online members”. This is what Discord calls hoisting a role.
- Enable Administrator. In the role’s permissions, switch on Administrator. Save changes.
- Assign the role to yourself. Go to Server Settings, then Members, find your name, click the plus button and add the new role.
- Check the member list. Your name should now appear under the new role heading, without the crown.
Discord’s help article is clear on one point: the admin role must be visible in the member list. If the role is not displayed separately, the crown stays.

On the Discord mobile app
The same method works on Android and iPhone. Tap the server name, open Settings, then Roles, and create the role. Turn on the separate display option and the Administrator permission, then go to Members and assign the role to your own account.
Changes sync across devices, so a role set up on the phone will also hide the crown on desktop.
How to get the crown back
If you want members to see the crown again, open the admin role and switch off “Display role members separately from online members”. Discord says the crown will reappear once no visible admin role is hoisted.
This is useful if you want to keep moderators with admin rights but still show members who the owner is.
Be careful with the Administrator permission
The Administrator permission gives every power on the server. A person with it can bypass channel permissions, change roles, remove members and edit server settings. Assign it only to people you trust fully.
For the crown trick, you can create the role only for yourself. You do not need to give it to anyone else. If you also want moderators, create a separate moderator role with only the permissions they need, such as managing messages or timing out members.
- Keep the number of admin accounts small.
- Ask admins to turn on two-factor authentication on their accounts.
- Review roles from time to time and remove access people no longer need.

What if you want to stop being the owner
Hiding the crown does not change ownership. If you want someone else to own the server, Discord lets you transfer it. On desktop, open the member list, right-click the member and choose Transfer Ownership. On mobile, go to Server Settings, then Members, tap the person and choose Transfer Ownership.
The new owner must already be a member. If you use two-factor authentication, Discord asks for the code during the transfer. Discord also says its support team cannot reverse a transfer once it is done, so be sure before you confirm.
Common reasons the crown does not disappear
- The role is not hoisted. The separate display option is off, so Discord does not show the role as its own group.
- Administrator is not enabled. A role with only moderator permissions will not hide the crown.
- The role is not assigned. Creating the role is not enough; it must be on a member’s profile, usually yours.
- The app has not refreshed. Close and reopen Discord to reload the member list.

Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off the crown icon on Discord with one setting?
No. Discord has no direct toggle. The crown hides when a role with the Administrator permission is displayed separately from online members.
Why did the crown disappear from my Discord server?
Usually because a hoisted role with Administrator permission was added or assigned. Turn off the separate display option on that role to bring the crown back.
Does removing the crown remove my ownership?
No. You stay the owner with full control. Only the icon is hidden. Ownership changes only if you use Transfer Ownership.
Can other members still find out who owns the server?
The crown is the main visual sign. Once it is hidden, members cannot spot the owner as easily from the member list.
