The ever-increasing pollution and deteriorating environmental conditions around the globe are making its presence felt on the minds of the gen x who is ‘aware about anything and everything.’
This sort of anxiety is termed as an ‘otiose’ explanation by the mental and public health officials because of its less coverage by the media and the ignorance shown by the society around the sensitivity felt by individuals suffering from it.
The very famous ‘ BMJ — BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL ‘covered the observations made by ‘ Mala Rao and Richard Powell of Imperial College London’s Department of Primary care and Public Health stating out its long terms on the youngsters ever concerned with environment leading to the marring of psychological efficiency as it’s not diagnosable easily.
They pointed to a survey done around the world in 2020 which covered almost the majority of young individuals, and it made a shocking revelation of about 57% of young children and adults showing signs of being perturbed by the damage happening to the environment.
The chunk of the younger generation suffering from environmental anxiety feels the perfidy of the government officials and adults whom they seek out for help. The government organizations cheat on them with flimsy excuses of shortage of funds and inattentiveness of the officials above them to just avoid their issues.
Greta Thunberg, a big name among the young environmentalists, raised her points and concerns at many international conferences and events to seek the attention of the world towards the damage caused by negligence by every individual at a micro-level and what we can do as an individual to reduce the environmental and climatic crisis at a steady pace.
Her courage was very well received by the media but was mocked by the elite minister “BORIS JOHNSON”, ‘PRIME MINISTER OF UK’ calling her act ‘Bunny Hugging.’
Licypriya Kangujam, an eight-year-old climate activist hailing from Imphal, India aka ‘Indian Greta’ was also mocked by politicians at national conferences and meetings to lower down her voice and conferences by adding every if and but in her proposals sent by her to the officials.
But is this the solution?
The most effective solution is to hear out their concerns by showing empathy rather than raising objections and providing accurate data of the steps taken by the higher officials on their ends to deal with irregularities in the projects under work for tackling the damage and the laws broken by the people. They need to assure them that no laxation would be provided to any person in case of breaking of the law and strict actions along with the probe will be done in case of each discrepancy.
No officials from any department would be lenient towards them and a fine of the huge sum would be charged against them. These sorts of assurance can help them calm their minds. Less consumption of energy and switching to a plant diet can be an effort taken on an individual level, apart from the macro-management required from the government.
