Rishikesh became prominent worldwide, particularly in the 1960s, when the English rock band, The Beatles, visited the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi here. Today, the place is popularly known as the Beatles Ashram, which attracts tourists from around the world.

Rishikesh is also known as the ‘Yoga Capital of the World’, and the international yoga festival is held here in the first week of March every year, which sees yoga lovers from every part of the world.

The town holds a lot of importance to Hindus as it is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga.
