The world might have moved a year ahead with this New Year. India was busy undoing the minimal progress done by our ancestors in terms of a functioning society.
On January 1, hundreds of Muslim women especially those who have been vocal against the brutality happening against the Muslim community were targeted in an app called ‘Bulli Bai’. The app was created in the hosting platform GitHub. The app was used to create a surface to auction Muslim women. The abhorrence of the incident is escalated by the fact that this has happened for the second time in six months.
Last year, Github gave space to an app called ‘Sulli Deals’. Both terms are used in a derogatory manner for Muslim women.
However, this time because of the mass uproar in social media and international coverage the police was forced to act on the FIRs filed by the women targeted. The cyber cell of the Mumbai police arrested an 18-year-old Shweta Singh from Uttarakhand, along with a 21-year-old engineering student Vishal Jha from Bengaluru and 21 year old Mayank Rawal.
Shweta and Vishal allegedly knew each other. Police officials have confirmed that there will be more arrests in the upcoming days.
The revelation of the age and the fact one of the accused is a woman has shown a loathsome mirror image of our society. But the question that needs to be asked is why are we shocked? Every Indian household has been propagating hate towards certain communities historically.
Every one of us has been instilled with various versions of prejudices against Muslims, they don’t care for education, they produce a lot of kids, they will convert you and the list goes on. It took a lot of us to put massive efforts into unlearning to relearn and debunk these stereotypes in our heads. The unlearning came with its consequences as the so-called woke now consider women wearing a hijab are naturally oppressed and in a need of liberation. On the contrary, the same woke crowd feels the woman performing Karwa Chauth is merely traditional.
This regime has provided us with the sheer confidence to express the prejudices and the impunity that no action will be taken against you.
The other reason for the shock is the background of Shweta Singh. She has lost her father to Covid-19 and before that, her mother to cancer. The ugly truth is that the state has been successful in diverting the youth in making them believe that the enemy is in the form of a community.
The youth who was supposed to threaten any governing party by asking difficult questions on unemployment, death of their dear ones because the state didn’t provide oxygen cylinders or bed for that matter or price hike has become puppets gulping down the cocktail made by the government on whom to hate. The cocktail has historians, artists, writers, journalists, basically anybody and everybody that raises a voice against the government.
The role of the bartenders played by the mainstream media shouldn’t be forgotten. They propagated the hate day and night by creating false narratives with concepts like ‘thook jihad’, ‘land jihad’, ‘population jihad’.
We will have to digest the fact that three educated young citizens of our country committed themself to create an app, collect details and images of hundreds of women from the Muslim community and publish it for people to look at it and bid on it just to humiliate them. This is what we have become.
