Soon after the announcement of the collaborative virtual meeting amongst the two largest economies, the United States and China, the prophecies considering the issues to be discussed were enormous. The declaration about these two superpowers’ summit came shortly after the successful end of this year’s climate summit, COP 26. The anticipated virtual conference between the President of the United States of America Joe Biden and the President of China Xi Jinping was focused majorly on co-labour, peace, competition, and co-existence. The sensitive topics including Climate Change and the increasing tensions in Taiwan were also debated.
The significant statements exchanged between the respective leaders of the U.S and China in the virtual summit is illustrated below:
While greeting Xi Jinping, the initial phrases uttered by Joe Biden were, “As I have said before it seems to be our responsibility as the leaders of China and the United States to ensure that the competition between our countries does not veer into conflict, intended or unintended.” Biden described the relation between China and the U.S as “open and candid” in the prior years and wishes to remain the same in the approaching years.
“We need to establish some common-sense guardrails, to be honest, and clear when we disagree and work together where our interests intersect, especially on global issues like climate change”, as stated by Joe Biden while pointing towards the possibility of an alliance with China shortly, two permanent members of the UN.
China President Xi Jinping called Joe Biden his “old friend” and requested for “increased communication and cooperation” between the two countries. Furthermore, he said that both the nations should concentrate on their domestic affairs and meanwhile should share the international responsibilities and work together for the advancement of the noble cause of world peace and development. “Both China and the United States should respect each other, coexist in peace, and pursue win-win cooperation. I stand ready to work with you Mr President to build a consensus, take active steps and move the U.S-China relation in a positive direction”, asserted Xi Jinping.
Joe Biden addresses the Economy, Human Rights, and an independent Indo-Pacific region as the prime emphasis of this bilateral meeting. The words of the U.S president suggested the ongoing pressure on the island of Taiwan by the Chinese government. Taiwan is an independent country/island located in the northern direction of the People’s Republic of China and is a part of East Asia, maintaining its democratic government but lately, China began to invade Taiwan for which they expanded the military services in Taiwan’s land.
The Chinese authorities even threaten several companies to include Taiwan as a part of China in their respective platforms. Biden strongly opposed the unfair usage of the troops for acquiring Taiwan’s property and further convinced the Taiwanese population for complete assistance if China incited any war in the future.
However, Xi doesn’t appear to be pleased with the interference of the United States on the issue of the increased military in the territory of Taiwan and warns them by labelling the situation as “playing with fire” which may burn the U.S-China business partnership if they hinder in private matters. Nonetheless, the two most dominant countries of the world determining the fate of the other country and the millions of people residing is not the “peace” we expected and look forward to.
