Maharashtra Floods have left the state in utter turmoil, with the death toll touching the limit of 213 on Wednesday. Some residents told the officers that the Water level has risen to more than 25 feet at some places in Mahad town, and there is a risk of having landslides in the area soon.
Similarly, more than 100 villages are facing the threat of landslides, reported India Today.
The level of 25 feet of water is something new that the residents came across this time, which have also managed to submerge the ground and the first floors of many buildings.
According to the report, eight people are still missing since the floods and landslides started due to heavy rainfall in the state on July 20. The coastal Konkan region and the western districts of the state have been the worst victims.
Raigad remains the worst affected district amidst all, with 90 casualties. The next worst-hit region is Satara with 45 deaths and Ratnagiri with 35 deaths.
On Monday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held a meeting to discuss the flood situation and evaluate the damage done in flood-afflicted districts of the state.
He announced measures and asked to restore electricity and water supply in the affected areas immediately. Moreover, road repair is also another concern that needs immediate attention, reported The Indian Express.
“The electricity and water supply in flood-hit areas should be restored immediately. Also, the roads have eroded in many places, and bridges have submerged.
So, the repair work should be taken up on war footing so that the traffic movement can be brought back to normalcy,” Thackeray said.
Moreover, the CM also asserted that the flood warning system should be a priority in the Konkon area, which should be completed within the next three months.
Moreover, to avoid any more such natural disasters in the future, a proposal from each district is sought to build flood protection walls for small localities and villages where water rushes in.
The Sangli district in Western Maharashtra did not receive incessant rain. However, the release of water from the Koyna dam led to flooding the area with Sangli city and several villages.
The disaster management department said 349 relief camps had been set up to evacuate people and shelter them. It includes 216 centers in Kolhapur, 74 centers in Sangli, 29 centers in Satara, 16 centers in Ratnagiri, and 14 centers in Raigad.
On the compensation towards the victims, the CM has not made any announcement yet. He has said that first proper inquiry would be made and also based on help from the Centre they would announce the compensation. “I will not announce anything right now to gain popularity.
Only after a comprehensive review of the flood situation in the state, the compensation will be announced along with what and how much help can be sought from the Centre,” Thackeray said.
