The year 2020 has been delivering very heart-breaking news one after the other. In times like such, something as trivial as helping someone lesser out sounds like a revival of good times. Humanity has been tested quite a few times in the last ten months and we stand ashamed at its failures most of the times. Like a little light at the end of the tunnel, we do come across incidents that make us hold on to the belief that humanity is not lost, not yet at least. One such incident from down south came to the light of the day.

The city of Hubballi, Karnataka, saw a rather humanitarian side of a traffic cop who are often believed otherwise. Shambhu Radder, a traffic cop from Hubballi East Traffic Police Station was on his duty at the Sangolli Rayanna Circle in the city when he saw Kumar, a class 9 boy and his aunt carrying big bags of festoons of mango leaves, trying to earn a penny or two. The festive season being around the corner, it was their chance to be well fed once again.

Seeing the plight of the boy, Shambhu the traffic cop couldn’t stop but ask them about their business. On enquiring, the cop came to know that Kumar hails from Tadasinakoppa village, 20km from Hubballi. This class 9 boy attends a government school there, but as the pandemic has affected his financial conditions, his family cannot afford his necessities. The school provides free education and books but he had no penny to his name to buy himself notebooks let alone attend online classes on a smartphone. Moved by the story, the cop went to a nearby stationery shop and bought him enough notebooks and pens to last the entire academic year.

Being short on cash himself, the cop could not afford to buy the boy a smartphone but suggested him to attend his classes together with a friend who has one. Radder helped Kumar in all the ways he could, and it was all that matters.

Gandhi Jayanti: The Teachings of Gandhi That Stands True Even Today

The pandemic has affected people from all walks of life. The sufferings don’t seem to end, but that shouldn’t stop one from being or doing good. And today, a traffic cop has set a live example for us to learn and get motivated to do good like this to not just knowns, but everyone. ‘Help others’ should not last only to good manners books or moral science classes. Lending a hand won’t make anyone fall short on something. If anything, it will only help raise a better society. The socio-economic disparity between the haves and the have nots needs to be pitched, and every individual has a part to play in doing so.
